OUR HISTORY

The Mdluli Clan are descendents of Matsafeni Mdluli who was a leader of a secessionist group that broke away from the Swazi kingdom during the previous century. His descendants, the members of the Mdluli Clan, occupied the farm Matsafeni in about 1840. This farm consisted of farms now known as Riverside, Woodhouse, Dingwell, Marathon, and Boschrand.

Mdluli, the son of Nyatsi Mdluli and Nkofane Dlamini, was the first indvuna of the Royal homestead at Hhohho in Northern Swaziland which was established by Ngwenyama Mswazi in about 1852, he is also a brother to Gwamile Mdluli. Matsafeni Mdluli controlled a wide Northern part of the present Swaziland and boundary to the Ngwenya (Crocodile) River.
Mdluli developed a great reputation as a warrior and played a leading role in the assault by the Inyatsi regiment on the homestead of Maleo, leader of the Kopa, in May 1864 he led a small force of 50 men which scaled the steep hillside to the rear of the homestead whilst the main Imphi attacked the front slope.

On Mswati death in August 1865 Mdluli became important in the National Councils and was among those who sent messengers to discuss the possibility of a third cession of land to the Boers. After this Mdluli played little part in either Politics or Military Affairs. He was sent to J.C. Krogh, the landrost at Wakkerstroom in September 1885 to complain about J.A. Erasmus.

Matsafeni Mdluli moved to Ngwenya River with his followers and their cattle. atsafeni settled on the Farm which was later leased by Halls in 1890. he Barberton Herald described Mdluli as a big placid humoured looking man. The is a picture of Mdluli's grave in u.dev. Pienaar's book "Neem uit die verlede," and its location is shown on maps in that book.

The Farm was known as Riverside Farm, after Matsafeni Mdluli was killed and robbed of his gold, H.L.Hall & Sons named the Farm MATAFFIN. Mdluli passed away after he was shot by Nhliziyo on his way to Portuguese. Mdluli was the first Swazi man who came to stay at ngwenya ( Crocodile river ).

  2. Hi,

Are you somehow related to Chief Matsafeni Mdluli? I'm asking because I need more reading material on him. Matsafeni is my maternal great grandfather. My name is Mandla Dlamini of Nelspruit.

    Thanks

    Mandla Dlamini.
